We’re excited that you’re taking the first step and considering joining us for an archery class. Whether it’s to learn a new skill, improve your focus, or have the most interesting hobby to share during an icebreaker, we think you’ll leave our classes with a new appreciation for the sport.
In our blog post, we’re covering six of the most common questions we receive about our archery classes:
1. What is archery?
Archery is the practice of using a bow and an arrow. There are several different styles of archery that people practice for different purposes, for example:
- Olympic style, which focuses on the sport aspect of the bow and arrow
- Archery as a means for hunting and survival
- Chinese archery, which embraces the tactical use of the weapon for purposes of introspective development
At Pa Kua, we teach Chinese archery, as it combines the tradition and precision of different shooting positions (standing, in motion), with the therapeutic inner work that is often embedded in many Asian martial art practices. The external and internal development in our archery classes creates a very dynamic, unique, and rich experience for our students.
2. Are archery classes safe?
Discipline is one of the most important aspects of this class, not just because of the traditional Chinese values of the training, but also due to the use of real equipment.
Before students learn to shoot, we extensively cover safety rules and how to handle the equipment to minimize risks to class participants. Our students’ safety is always our top priority.
Students must respect the shooting line, which should never be crossed to retrieve arrows or for other purposes, unless explicitly allowed by the instructor. Students should also remain focused on their equipment at all times to avoid the risk of misfires and other accidents. To ensure participant safety, we regularly review the safety rules, keep classes smaller, and always have a trained instructor supervising.
3. How does archery help students? Will archery make me fit?
Archery helps students gain confidence as their skills grow.
Although archery is not as physically demanding as some sports, it requires discipline, hand-eye coordination, balance, and stability to perfect. Many students benefit from improved posture, core strength, and shoulder/back strength with continued practice of the sport.
4. Are archery classes expensive?
Our membership fees are not based on the type of classes that you attend, so there is no difference in membership pricing whether you choose to go with martial art, archery, yoga, or a mix of other classes.
Often, the practice of archery is expensive due to the purchase of equipment. However, students are not expected to own their own equipment to join our archery classes. Our studio provides bows, arrows, and any other additional equipment that you will need for training.
You can view our membership pricing and find the plan that fits your budget and schedule.
5. Do I need to bring my own equipment?
No, our studio provides everything that you’ll need during archery classes, including bows, arrows, and targets.
Students are also welcome to purchase and use their own equipment. However, it is crucial to keep in mind that not all archery equipment is the same and may not be suitable for our classes. We are happy to guide our students to identify what kind of equipment they can use and help them choose from the many available options on the market.
6. What should I wear to an archery class?
Our uniform is the best outfit for classes, and you will receive your uniform, included in your registration fee, when you sign up for a membership with us!
If you are attending a trial class, we have spare uniforms that you can borrow. As an alternative, we recommend wearing comfortable exercise clothing that will not restrict your movement, such as a t-shirt, sweatpants, or leggings.
